Written in Seattle in December 2022, this composition for six players explores the very close, “shattered” intervallic relationships found within the combined slendro and pelog tunings of Gamelan Pacifica’s Si Thomas set of instruments. Shaped by a long-standing, embodied relationship with these instruments through years of performing with the ensemble, the piece was crafted through a hands-on approach. As the sounds were conjured and sculpted, they revealed fractured pitch relationships that echo the splintered contours of a broken heart. Commissioned by Gamelan Pacifica.
